SAN FRANCISCO, California — A 58-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday morning in the city’s Sunset District, and police are actively searching for a suspect as the investigation continues.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of 46th Avenue and Willow Street, in the 2500 block of 46th Avenue near Ulloa Street. Officers were summoned to the scene following reports of a man who had been shot.
San Francisco police confirmed that the shooter fired and struck the victim multiple times.
“Officers immediately rendered aid and medics came to the scene to assist with the injured victim,” a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson said. “Despite the efforts of the first responders, the victim was declared deceased at the scene.”
The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to identify the victim and notify next of kin. Police say they have talked with witnesses and accessed video shot around the time of the fatal shooting.
“We are searching for a suspect and are scouring the neighborhood for evidence, as well as any eyewitness statements that anyone can provide,” an SFPD spokesperson said.
The shooting occurred just hours before the start of the Bay to Breakers race, which began at 8 a.m. However, authorities do not believe the events are connected.
“At this time, we have no evidence to believe that this is related to anyone who was in the Bay to Breakers, or is related to the Bay to Breakers event,” the spokesperson added.
This marks the 17th homicide of the year in San Francisco, a figure that is nearly double where the city stood at the same time last year. The investigation remains active, with police continuing to search for suspects and gather additional information.
