Naperville Police Arrest Nine in Downtown Teen Takeover

NAPERVILLE, Illinois — Nine individuals were taken into custody and nearly three dozen citations were issued Monday evening after large groups of predominantly teenagers converged on downtown Naperville in an event authorities described as a “teen takeover.”

Naperville Police Chief stated that officers had anticipated the gathering and deployed additional personnel starting around 5:00 p.m. He emphasized that the department had previously warned there would be “no second chances” for those engaging in unlawful behavior, and that arrests would be made without hesitation.

According to the Police Chief, five juveniles were arrested on charges including battery, assault, drug-related offenses, obstructing identification, criminal trespass, and disobeying or interfering with a peace officer. None of the juveniles were Naperville residents; they hailed from Plainfield, Bloomington, Bolingbrook, Aurora, and Romeoville. Four adults were also arrested, with only one being a Naperville resident.

The Police Chief addressed the broader context of the incident, stressing the role of parental guidance. “Parents need to have discussions with their kids about what being a good citizen looks like and being a good neighbor, being a good friend,” he said. He also called on social media platforms to take greater responsibility in preventing the rapid organization of large, unsupervised gatherings.

“There’s a great responsibility there. It’s a super powerful tool that you can put a flier out there and you can get hundreds or more hundreds, thousands of people together,” the Police Chief noted. “But I can’t think of an event that’s identified as a teen takeover that hasn’t led to issues like we saw last night.”

Authorities confirmed that the crowds had dispersed by late evening. The Naperville Police Department reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety and indicated that future unpermitted gatherings of this nature would be met with similar enforcement actions.
