Atlanta Floods Submerge Major Highways as Rainstorms Paralyze Evening Commute

ATLANTA, Georgia — Heavy rain triggered flash flooding across Atlanta on Wednesday, forcing the closure of major interstate lanes and bringing rush hour traffic to a standstill.

Flood waters quickly overwhelmed parts of Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 along the downtown connector, one of the busiest highway stretches in Georgia. Visuals showed multiple vehicles stranded due to rising water, including a white car in the middle of the flooded roadway.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning as intense downpours continued across the city. Flooding was also reported along North Avenue and several nearby roads, adding to widespread travel disruption during the evening commute.

City crews were deployed to clear storm drains in an effort to ease water buildup and reopen blocked sections of the interstate. Authorities later reopened the affected highway lanes, but officials warned that flash flood risks remain in place as more rain moves across the region.

North Georgia is in for an extended stretch of unsettled weather because a stalled cold front lingers over the region with rich moisture flowing in from the Gulf of Mexico. The region is expected to experience repeated bouts of heavy rain and thunderstorms through the holiday weekend.
