Chef Robert Irvine Redefines the Classic July 4 BBQ While Honoring Veterans for America’s 250th

MIAMI, Florida – World-renowned chef Robert Irvine is bringing his culinary expertise to the small screen to explore what defines a classic July 4 BBQ while honoring military veterans. In a recent interview promoting his new special, “American Kitchen: An America 250 BBQ,” the British-born chef discussed patriotic food, his personal connection to the United States, and his ongoing charitable efforts to support those who served.

The upcoming special is designed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States by reintroducing patriotic foods to the grill. During the interview, Irvine paid a heartfelt tribute to the military and first responders featured in the project, including Marines, Navy personnel, Air Force members, and firefighters. He described these veterans as the epitome of excellence and emphasized that “freedom is not free,” expressing deep gratitude for the sacrifices that make such national celebrations possible.

When asked what an Englishman knows about American barbecue, Irvine playfully noted that the English actually brought beef to America back in 1776. Moving to the modern grill, he defined the classic American Independence Day menu as barbecue, hamburgers, and hot dogs. However, he noted that the tradition has evolved significantly over the years and can now include almost anything, such as shredded chicken burgers—though he jokingly drew the line at grilling fish or salmon.

Reflecting on his career alongside two other great chefs, Irvine shared that while he is British by birth, he actively chose to become an American. He expressed his deep love for the country, highlighting the amazing reciprocal relationship between America and the people who serve it.

Beyond the kitchen, Irvine is teaming up with the rock band O.A.R. to raise funds for the Robert Irvine Foundation. Irvine joked that he initially didn’t know “what or who” the band was, but after meeting them, he fell in love with their music. The band is currently on their July tour, which Irvine has sponsored to bring veterans to their live shows. Following the performances, attendees are treated to an exclusive dinner with Irvine and the band members. The initiative is specifically aimed at raising money to support veterans in Florida.
