CHICAGO, Illinois — Four teenagers were shot early Sunday morning in the city’s Little Village neighborhood during a Memorial Day weekend marked by heightened violence across Chicago, according to police and community officials.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. near 25th Street. Victims were rushed to local hospitals and are expected to survive. The incident unfolded amid large gatherings that officials described as part of a “teen takeover” weekend, a pattern of unsupervised youth gatherings that have periodically led to disorder in recent years.
Chicago has traditionally experienced an uptick in violent crime during the Memorial Day holiday, and this year followed that trend. Detectives launched approximately 20 shooting investigations citywide between Friday and Sunday, according to Chicago Police Department data.
In a separate incident on the West Side near Loomis and Roosevelt, an 18-year-old driver plowed into a crowd, injuring five Chicago police officers before crashing. Authorities recovered a weapon at the scene and took a suspect into custody.
Community leaders in Little Village expressed frustration over the violence and what they described as inadequate police preparation. The Little Village Community Council President stated that local leaders had attempted to meet with commanders from the 10th District to develop strategies to curb summer violence but had been met with silence.
“The police department, the 10th District, knew they were having a party, and instead of having a police officer near just in case something happened, they were not prepared,” said the Little Village Community Council President. “They were not trying to prevent these type of incidents.”
The spokesperson emphasized growing concerns among residents as summer begins. “A lot of families want to enjoy the city, enjoy the summer, enjoying being out. And this is something that now they’re going to worry: Is it safe to go out? Is it safe to go to the lake?” The statement also referenced a shooting involving a fruit vendor on 26th Street approximately one month prior.
As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been announced in connection with the Little Village shooting. Police continue to search for the gunman.
Chicago police have not yet released a detailed action plan for managing large gatherings during the summer months, despite repeated requests from community groups. Residents say they remain exhausted and concerned about ongoing violence affecting neighborhood safety.
