Six Bodies Found in Texas Train Car as Heat Stroke Suspected in Border Tragedy

LAREDO, Texas – Six people, five men and one woman, were discovered dead inside a shipping container at a Union Pacific train yard in Laredo, Texas, on Sunday, May 10, in an incident early findings suggest may be linked to extreme heat.

A Union Pacific worker opened the shipping container at a remote rail yard and found the six bodies, prompting officers and firefighters to respond to the scene. Officials confirmed all six individuals had died.

“An autopsy examination on the 29-year-old woman ruled out her death as accidental caused by hyperthermia or heat stroke,” officials stated. Medical examiners believe the remaining victims likely died from heat exposure as well, but further examinations are pending to reach a conclusion.

Investigators recovered identification cards and mobile phones suggesting the victims may have come from Mexico and Honduras. Authorities have taken fingerprints and shared them with U.S. Border Patrol under its missing alien program to confirm identities. Officials also contacted the Mexican consulate after identifying the woman.

Laredo is a major land port of entry that frequently handles cross-border trade and sits along routes often used for undocumented migration. Authorities have not confirmed any link between the deaths and a smuggling operation.

The case echoes past tragedies near the border, including a 2022 incident in San Antonio where 53 migrants died inside a sweltering truck — the deadliest human smuggling case in U.S. history.
