RIVERHEAD, New York – A Mother’s Day domestic disturbance turned deadly Sunday after police fatally shot a man accused of stabbing his 62-year-old disabled mother in her Long Island home.
Authorities responded to a domestic abuse call at 89 Topping Drive in Riverhead. A source confirmed to eyewitness news that responding police officers shot and killed the son at the scene. The knife was reportedly in the son’s hand when he was shot.
The mother, who neighbors say was confined to a wheelchair and had suffered through years of domestic abuse, was airlifted via medevac to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The incident prompted a massive emergency response, shutting down part of the neighborhood to traffic. Units from multiple towns arrived to assist. “There were just flying down the street. Every possible unit—Southampton, Quogue, Westhampton, Riverhead, Northampton,” one neighbor recalled.
According to a source, police had been directed to the home twice that day as the family crisis escalated. Neighbors described the mother as a quiet, lovely woman who had triplet boys, at least two of whom had a history of mental illness. Her husband had passed away, leaving her to manage family issues alone.
“She’s lovely, a beautiful woman. I believe that her son just had some mental issues and was going through some things. Beautiful lovely lady,” a neighbor said.
Three Southampton police officers were treated and released following the incident. The New York State Attorney General’s Office has joined the investigation into the fatal police-involved shooting.
“We’ve all been brainwashed into thinking, oh, not in my backyard. This doesn’t happen in my community. This doesn’t happen in my neighborhood. But it does,” a resident added.
Friends of the family said they are hoping for the best for the mother’s recovery.
