Iran’s military has released footage it claims shows its forces firing missiles, intensifying a week of escalating maritime conflict as the United States Navy reports disabling two additional Iranian tankers attempting to breach a naval blockade.
Tensions remain high following a series of confrontations in the strategic Strait. The released footage, which has not been independently verified, comes one day after Iran allegedly fired at three U.S. Navy destroyers moving through the waterway. According to U.S. military statements, American forces responded by taking out the missiles and their launchers, as well as sinking several fast attack boats.
“If you fire a drone or missile at our destroyer, what are we supposed to do? Let it hit it,” United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in response to the Iranian provocation.
The latest developments mark a sharp escalation in regional hostilities, with both sides exchanging fire and seizing vessels. Officials report that this round of confrontation follows a battle yesterday, after which the U.S. Navy moved to disable the two Iranian tankers accused of attempting to run the established blockade. No casualties have been reported from the most recent incidents.
