Driver Kills Suspected Carjacker in Garland as Family Flees Vehicle

Garland, Texas – A driver fatally shot a man attempting to carjack his vehicle while the driver’s family, including several children, were still inside, according to the Garland Police Department. The incident, which occurred Sunday afternoon near Jerry Road and Highway 66, was captured on surveillance video from a nearby business.

The video shows the suspected carjacker crossing the street into a convenience store parking lot, approaching a white vehicle, and walking directly to the driver’s side while appearing to raise his arm. The driver then jumped out, apparently holding a gun, and tried to pull the man away from the vehicle. The two began to struggle.

As the fight continued, the video shows a young boy running from the car, followed by several women and children. Once the family was out of the vehicle, the driver moved away from the car with his gun drawn, circled the vehicle, and then fired, killing the suspect.

Garland Police confirmed that the driver remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with investigators.

“Yeah, as of right now, we’re looking at this as self-defense,” a Garland Police spokesperson said.

Police said the suspect had crashed nearby earlier and struck two other vehicles. Investigators added that he then went to a gas station and tried to forcefully steal other cars but was unsuccessful.

“We have to look at the totality of circumstances. There’s three incidents total that occurred during the shooting,” the spokesperson said.

Taylor Stanfield, a 13-year resident of the area who witnessed the aftermath, expressed concern over the proximity of the violence.

“It’s definitely very concerning. My kids are playing outside all the time. My wife’s out there with them, and like I said, you know, if somebody like this were able to drive away in that vehicle, who knows what would have happened?” Stanfield said.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Police said no charges have been filed against the driver at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
