Dating Costs Surge in America as Inflation Reshapes Romance

Dating in America is becoming significantly more expensive, with the average all-in cost of a date reaching $189 in 2026 — a 12.5% increase from the previous year, according to the 2026 Real Financial Progress Index. The figure encompasses transportation, grooming, dining, drinks, and entertainment.

The rise has hit different generations unevenly. Millennials reported the highest average spending at $252 per date, followed by Gen Z at $225.

This increase in dating expenses has far outpaced the broader United States inflation rate, highlighting how higher living costs are increasingly affecting personal relationships and social behavior.

A recent survey found that nearly half of singles are going on fewer dates or opting for lower-cost activities. The average number of dates per person has declined from around 14 last year to 12 in 2026.

Many singles are shifting toward budget-friendly options such as coffee meetups, outdoor activities, picnics, or home-cooked meals instead of expensive dinners and events. Experts note that higher living costs are reducing people’s willingness to spend heavily on uncertain first meetings, while some are moving away from dating apps to meet people organically.

Financial pressures are also reshaping expectations around who pays on dates. Around 71% of men surveyed said they expect to pay for everything during the early stages of dating, while over half of women say they prefer splitting expenses evenly.

Experts also point to social media algorithms for amplifying extreme views around dating and money, which is creating growing divisions in financial expectations within relationships as inflation continues to squeeze household budgets.

Analysts say America’s dating culture is increasingly being shaped by affordability rather than spontaneity.
