Chicago Teen Charged With Attempted Murder After Vehicle Strikes Five Officers During ‘Teen Takeover’

CHICAGO, Illinois — An 18-year-old Chicago resident is facing five counts of first-degree attempted murder and eight additional charges after allegedly driving a vehicle into five police officers during a chaotic “teen takeover” early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. when officers responded to break up a large, unruly gathering of teenagers. According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Rashad Johnson, operated a blue sedan that struck the officers before colliding with a pole, a fence, and a police vehicle. All five officers were transported to a local hospital and are reported to be in fair condition.

Neighbors described the scene as overwhelmingly chaotic, with crowds of teenagers appearing suddenly, climbing on cars, and gathering in the middle of the street. Residents expressed shock at the scale of the gathering and the lack of immediate resources to manage the situation.

Chicago’s Mayor issued a statement emphasizing parental responsibility, urging families to monitor their children’s whereabouts and activities, particularly during late-night hours. “Parents need to know where their children are and to take some accountability,” the Mayor stated.

The incident unfolded during an especially violent weekend in Chicago. Authorities reported 25 shooting victims across the city, including two separate mass shootings. In one incident, four teenagers were injured, including a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old.

The Chicago event is part of a broader national pattern of disruptive and sometimes violent “teen takeovers” at public venues. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia announced that federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., will begin holding parents accountable for their children’s participation in such gatherings, following similar incidents in the capital, including a disruptive event at a local restaurant.

Other municipalities have also experienced challenges with these gatherings. Norfolk, Virginia, has reported violent crowds in recent months, including incidents involving dangerous projectiles. Conversely, officials in Pontiac, Michigan, successfully prevented a planned takeover this weekend by deploying officers to major intersections after monitoring social media chatter about the event.

Law enforcement and community leaders across the country continue to grapple with these gatherings, which frequently target malls, beaches, and restaurants. Officials stress that while not all youth gatherings are problematic, events that escalate into violence or property damage require coordinated community and parental responses to ensure public safety.
