Austin Police Investigate 10 Random Shootings in South Austin; Two Suspects in Custody

AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities are investigating 10 apparently random shootings that occurred late Saturday and into Sunday, most of them concentrated in South Austin, with two incidents targeting Austin Fire Department stations.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis provided an update Sunday afternoon as the investigation continued.

“We are reporting multiple shootings throughout the area. Two of those have been at our fire station at two Austin Fire Department stations,” Mayor Watson said. “These are occurring primarily in South Austin and we don’t have any specific motive that has been identified. In fact, these actions appear to be random.”

Mayor Watson urged residents to remain vigilant, noting that suspects appeared to be changing vehicles. He encouraged anyone who sees anything suspicious to call 911 immediately and to heed any alarms or warnings issued by authorities.

Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that investigators are looking into the 10 shootings, describing them as random with no identified motive.

At the time of the briefing, vehicles believed to be used in the incidents included a black or dark blue Hyundai, a gold Hyundai sedan, a silver Mazda four-door, and a white Kia Optima, which police were actively seeking.

The suspects have been described as two male Hispanics in their late teens. One has medium-length wavy hair and the other has longer hair.

Four individuals were shot in the incidents: one sustained serious injuries and three received minor injuries. Chief Davis also advised residents not to leave cars unlocked or keys or key fobs inside vehicles, as some cars are being stolen in connection with the events.

Update on suspects: Two suspects are now in custody, while one remains at large in the Manor area. A shelter-in-place order for South Austin has been lifted.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Police continue to ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to 911 without approaching any suspects or vehicles.
