Armed Suspect Shot by Police After 7-Hour Standoff in Kenosha

KENOSHA, Wisconsin – A nearly eight-hour police standoff ended in gunfire early Tuesday morning when a Kenosha police officer shot an armed suspect who had fired at officers, authorities said.

The incident began Monday evening near 50th Street and 14th Avenue after Kenosha police responded to a child custody issue at a nearby home. According to police, 911 dispatchers overheard sounds of a struggle from the female caller, who is connected to 35-year-old suspect Andres Casas.

Officers arrived at the home prepared to arrest Casas on domestic violence charges, but he ran off, leading them to a white house on 14th Avenue.

Police attempted to arrest Casas, but instead he fired a gun at officers, authorities said. He then ran inside the house.

Neighbors described the tense scene. One resident recalled officers yelling at people to go back inside and get off porches. When asked if they were scared and worried, the resident replied, “I mean, yes, yes we were, because it’s right here. It’s right here. You know, we don’t know what happened there.”

Another neighbor recounted officers telling residents to “get in the house” after the shooting began. “So we didn’t know what to expect,” they said.

Police shut down 14th Street and worked for hours to get Casas to surrender, calling in a Bearcat armored vehicle and punching out windows to reach him. One resident noted, “I think when they threw the tear gas or the bombs in there, I sensed all that.”

Approximately eight hours after the standoff began, Casas exited the home through a window. While making the arrest, a Kenosha police officer shot him.

A neighbor described waking up to the scene: “You wake up to some chaos like this. It’s crazy. It’s really crazy.”

News cameras captured Casas being carried away at 1 a.m. He is in custody at Froedtert Hospital with injuries. Police said officers found a gun at the home where they arrested him. No officers were hurt.

The Racine County Sheriff’s investigators are leading the investigation.
