‘I Thought He Was Robbing the Place’: Survivor Stabbed Seven Times in Richardson Bar Attack

RICHARDSON, Texas – A man who survived a stabbing rampage at a Richardson bar says he was stabbed seven times during the chaos and is grateful no major arteries were hit, as four victims remain hospitalized following the attack earlier this week.

The violence unfolded Wednesday night at Good Vibes Bar and Grill during bingo night, when 28-year-old Stephen Kwembe entered and began attacking the bartender, whom police have identified only by the name Fifi. Several customers rushed in to help before responding officers fatally shot the suspect outside the bar.

Garrett Leger, one of the victims, told reporters he initially misunderstood what was happening. “I thought he was robbing the place,” Leger said. “So what I hear, I ran over and I jumped over the bar to help. And kind of from that point forward is a little bit of a blur to me. I haven’t put those pieces together.”

Leger said he did not recognize the attacker. “I had never seen him there before,” he added.

According to police, Kwembe called 911 before the incident and told dispatch he planned to harm people at the bar. Authorities released body camera video showing Kwembe outside the establishment holding a knife. After officers asked him multiple times to drop the weapon, he began walking toward them, at which point they opened fire.

Leger said he has since heard the 911 call and seen the video, describing it as “chilling” to learn the attack was premeditated.

The bar’s owner has stated online that he does not personally know the suspect but confirmed that Kwembe had been in the bar in the past and was kicked out.

All four victims remain hospitalized, with some in the ICU. The community has rallied to support them, creating GoFundMe pages for each of the injured. The bar reopened Friday and is currently open for business.
