Cobb County Police: Woman, 71, Killed by Son Before He Died in Officer-Involved Shooting

COBB COUNTY, Georgia – Two people are dead following a tense standoff and shootout with law enforcement on Sunday morning, according to Cobb County police.

Officers were initially dispatched to a home on Van Diver Drive around 8:30 a.m. to conduct a welfare check. Police say a man inside the residence refused to respond to officers and refused to come out.

Hours later, authorities heard a gunshot from inside the home, prompting the response of a SWAT team.

Investigators say a 71-year-old woman was killed, and her 29-year-old son is believed to be responsible for killing his mother.

According to police, the son later engaged in a shootout with officers before taking his own life. The investigation remains ongoing.
