The U.S. military confirmed Friday that its forces intercepted and destroyed four Iranian one-way attack drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz, citing an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic.
In a statement released via social media platform X, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the intercept occurred as the drones approached one of the world’s most critical shipping chokepoints. Following the shoot-down, U.S. forces conducted defensive strikes against Iranian coastal surveillance radar installations located in Goruk and on Qeshm Island.
“The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic,” CENTCOM stated. “U.S. forces subsequently struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island to defend against further attacks.”
The command emphasized that American forces “remain vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression in self-defense.”
The incident unfolds amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire between U.S. and Iranian forces. While negotiations involving mediating nations including Pakistan and Qatar have continued, no final agreement on a stable pathway toward peace has been publicly confirmed. Discussions regarding de-escalation are reportedly being coordinated through senior government channels, including talks centered at the White House.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments, has remained a focal point of regional tensions. Maritime monitoring data continues to show active vessel traffic through the strategic waterway despite the escalation.
CENTCOM reiterated that all defensive actions were taken to protect international maritime interests and U.S. personnel, and that forces in the region maintain a heightened state of readiness.
