San Francisco, California – A San Francisco police officer and a passenger in a suspect vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries during a Sunday night shootout in the Bayview district, while a robbery suspect who fled on foot was later taken into custody, police said.
The incident began just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday when a vehicle linked to a robbery suspect entered San Francisco via the Bay Bridge. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Fifth Street near Folsom Street, but the car sped away, initiating a pursuit that traveled through the Mission and First Street area before reaching Bayshore Boulevard and Gerald Avenue.
When the suspect vehicle became disabled, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop. According to police, the driver then opened fire on San Francisco Police Department officers, striking one officer multiple times. An officer-involved shooting occurred in response. During the exchange, the passenger in the suspect vehicle also sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The driver fled the scene on foot but was detained shortly afterward near Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street. SFPD officers transported both the injured officer and the suspect vehicle’s passenger to a local hospital. Both remained in critical condition with life-threatening injuries as of Monday morning. The arrested suspect was also taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Authorities established an extensive investigative scene centered around a Chevron station at Bayshore Boulevard and Gerald Avenue, where caution tape remained in place and officers documented evidence, including searching the suspect vehicle’s trunk. The injured officer was transported to SF General Hospital and Trauma Center, where Mayor Daniel Lurie later arrived to check on the officer’s condition amid a heavy police presence.
As of Monday morning, multiple road closures remained in effect, including Bayshore Boulevard, Gerald Avenue, and the on- and off-ramps for Highway 101 in both directions at Bayshore Boulevard. Police stated the incident remains under active investigation.
