The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered a critical new phase, with Ukrainian forces launching a massive 347-drone blitz targeting a military logistics hub near Moscow. The attack, one of the largest aerial assaults by Ukraine in the past four years, comes as both sides exchange heavy strikes despite competing self-imposed ceasefires in the run-up to Russia’s Victory Day celebrations.
Russian authorities have scrambled to respond to the deep strikes inside Russian territory over the past several days, which have put the Kremlin on high alert. Moscow has since threatened to strike Kyiv’s “decision-making centers” if Ukraine carries out further attacks during the May 9th commemorations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a defiant warning, stating that the fate of Moscow’s main parade now depends on Ukraine. “Ukraine will act in kind,” he said. “Depending on the situation overnight and tomorrow, we will also determine our fully justified responses. Russia has received from us a clear proposal on silence of the guns and diplomacy and knows how to contact Ukraine or our partners in order to coordinate the details. If the one person in Moscow who cannot live without war cares only about one parade and nothing else, that’s a different story.”
President Zelenskyy accused Moscow of ignoring a proposed ceasefire while continuing large-scale strikes across Ukraine, including a recent assault on Kharkiv that lit up the skyline and left civilians scrambling for safety. Russia maintains it has never targeted civilians or civilian infrastructure.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued an urgent warning in response to the escalating situation. In a statement, the Ministry strongly urged “the authorities of your country, the leadership of your organization to treat this statement with the utmost responsibility and to ensure the advanced evacuation from the city of Kyiv of personnel of diplomatic and other missions as well as citizens in view of the inevitability of a retaliatory strike by the armed forces of the Russian Federation against Kyiv.”
Moscow has drawn a fresh red line for Ukraine, threatening retaliatory strikes if Ukraine attacks the capital during Victory Day celebrations. In a notable shift, Russia has scaled back this year’s festivities. Tanks and missiles will not roll through Red Square for the first time in nearly two decades—a decision made after Ukraine launched drone attacks as far away as the Urals.
Security in Moscow has been fortified extensively. Russian National Guard soldiers and armed interior ministry police have been deployed across key locations, with extra security measures put in place for President Vladimir Putin in case of strikes on May 9th.
Ukrainian and Russian forces have traded fire 1,820 times since President Putin announced a ceasefire on May 4th. As the fighting rages on and a deadlock over peace talks prevails, Ukraine’s top negotiator is in Miami for a meeting with United States representatives.
