Three NYPD officers were taken to a local hospital on Wednesday after responding to an apartment fire in Flushing, according to police.
The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. on Casino Boulevard between Franklin and Ash Avenues. Cell phone video from the scene showed thick smoke and flames pouring from a second-floor apartment.
The officers suffered smoke inhalation but are expected to be okay, the NYPD confirmed.
Residents described harrowing escapes from the burning building. One resident explained they had to flee through a window: “We had to rush to the other side of our apartment, climb out the window, hop onto the garage ceiling and run off the roof.”
Another resident added, “Yeah, because we’re on the second floor. So there’s like a garage above us. So that’s the only way we could get out because there was so much smoke.”
