San Antonio, Texas — Authorities have charged a 34-year-old woman with capital murder after two young children, believed to be her 5- and 7-year-old offspring, were discovered dead inside a burning vehicle in an isolated parking lot on the city’s far west side.
The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. on Richland Hills Drive between Ingram and 410 in a warehouse complex. Police said the case began with a 911 call from a person walking their dog who spotted a small white sedan on fire.
Marlene Vidal of Edinburgh has been identified as the suspect and the children’s mother. She is facing capital murder charges in connection with their deaths. San Antonio authorities said Vidal has been cooperating with investigators.
Police emphasized the profound emotional impact of the case. “These cases are incredibly difficult and no matter how long you’ve been doing the job, scenes involving children are never easy,” authorities stated. “The emotional toll is significant not only for the first responders and investigators but for our entire community.”
Investigators said they are working with statements from Vidal, video evidence recovered at the scene, and additional forensic evidence. The medical examiner is tasked with officially confirming the identities of the children.
While a motive has not been publicly disclosed, police acknowledged the community’s desire for answers. “Everyone’s going to want to know why something like this happened. And unfortunately, the why is sometimes the hardest question to answer.”
Vidal lives in Edinburgh but has family ties in San Antonio, where investigators are speaking with relatives as they continue building the case. Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation to secure justice for the two young victims.
