LOGAN, Utah — A reported shooting in a northern Utah neighborhood prompted a swift SWAT team response Saturday afternoon, with residents sheltering in place as police investigated gunfire near a local park.
According to the Logan Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of 400 West 1100 North after multiple callers — including individuals involved in the dispute — reported hearing gunshots. A man believed to be the shooter was taken into custody.
Police located shell casings on the ground and a vehicle with bullet holes. Officials confirmed people were inside the vehicle during the shooting, but no one was injured.
Neighbors described the incident as completely unexpected in the normally quiet area. One witness recounted being at the park grilling when the gunfire erupted.
“We were over there grilling, and then a few minutes later… we just heard like gunshots,” the witness said.
Many initially mistook the sounds for fireworks. “Everybody thought it was some kind of a firework,” another resident recalled. “Then it was a clear… that was not a firework. That was a gunshot.”
The park was filled with families and children at the time. Parents quickly moved to protect their kids.
“All the mother and the father, they got their kids out of the way,” one witness said. “It was just scary. But I’m glad everyone is safe.”
Residents expressed shock at the violence occurring in their neighborhood. “It was a very unexpected day,” one neighbor said. “It’s not something you would expect in this part of town.”
Logan Police Department officials stated there is no threat to the community and no one was hurt. The department also recognized the assistance of at least six individuals who helped in the response.
The investigation remains ongoing.
