SAN JOSE, California — A suspected road rage incident escalated into a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of Valley Fair Mall, according to the San Jose Police Department. One driver shot another, leaving the victim hospitalized and the accused shooter arrested.
Police confirmed the altercation began as a traffic dispute before turning violent. Investigators observed a vehicle with blood inside linked to the incident. The mall resumed normal operations Wednesday as the investigation continues.
Nick Mackey, a local shopper, said the incident revived concerns from a previous shooting at the same location. “I was here on the Black Friday one too and that was like pretty scary,” Mackey said, referencing an incident months earlier where suspected gang members shot three people. “Now to hear that there’s another one, like I don’t know, it’s pretty scary.”
Mackey added that while he is not deterred from visiting the mall, the events prompt thoughts about personal safety. “It makes you think about like how to prepare, just how to get out, I guess, and avoid it,” he said.
San Jose police are treating the case as a road rage-related shooting. No further details about the motive or identities of those involved have been released pending the ongoing investigation.
