South LA Senior Living Facility Shooting Leaves 3 Staff Members Injured, Suspect in Custody

LOS ANGELES, California — A chaotic South Los Angeles senior living facility shooting was swiftly contained Tuesday morning after a staff member opened fire in the lobby of an elder care center, leaving three colleagues hospitalized. The suspect, who was also an employee at the residence, was apprehended without incident following a rapid and systematic police sweep of the six-story building.

The incident began at approximately 10:50 a.m. at Progressive Homes for Elderly, a residential care facility located near the intersection of 70th Street and Denver. According to Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Mark Reena, dispatch received emergency calls reporting shots fired at the location.

LAPD officers arrived on the scene within two minutes. Upon making entry into the lobby area, they discovered three victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The call was immediately upgraded to a potential active shooter situation, prompting a massive and coordinated response from both law enforcement and the Los Angeles Fire Department.

While firefighters triaged and transported the victims to a local hospital—one in critical condition and two in stable condition—police officers executed a systematic search of the building. Despite the facility housing over 100 units across six floors, investigators located no additional victims. The sole suspect was found on a different floor from the lobby and taken into custody without incident.

Deputy Chief Reena, who oversees the LAPD’s South Bureau, addressed the media alongside several key department officials, including Commander Ronald Joel, Commander Lay Morales, and Captain Mike Rippy. Reena confirmed that all three victims, as well as the suspect in custody, are staff members at the facility. He praised the seamless coordination between the police and fire departments, noting that the swift 120-second response time was crucial in managing the chaotic scene.

Los Angeles City Council President Marquis Harris-Dawson also spoke at the press briefing, expressing profound gratitude to the first responders for their decisive actions.

“Their action, we absolutely believe, prevented further injury and further loss of life of this very, very precious population that we have here in our community,” Harris-Dawson stated, emphasizing that over 100 vulnerable seniors reside in the building. He stressed the ongoing need to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure firearms are kept out of senior housing environments.

Detectives from the LAPD’s 77th Division are currently leading the investigation, interviewing witnesses and involved parties to determine the suspect’s exact position and role at the residence.

When questioned by the press about facility policies regarding employees carrying weapons, Deputy Chief Reena explained that there are no specific overarching laws he is aware of that explicitly ban firearms in these types of private care locations. Instead, the regulation of firearms on the premises is largely dictated by the private business’s own internal policies. Investigators are currently working to determine if the suspect’s possession of the weapon was legal and whether it violated the employer’s workplace rules.
