LANSING, Illinois — A fatal shooting inside a business in south suburban Lansing on Thursday afternoon left one employee dead and prompted an extensive police manhunt for a suspect who remains at large.
Lansing Police responded to an active shooter call just after 12:30 p.m. at a facility located near the Lansing Police Department. Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased person inside the building. Authorities confirmed the victim was an employee of the business.
A Lansing Police spokesperson stated that multiple witnesses observed the shooting. While it remains unclear whether the suspect was employed at the facility, investigators reported the gunman was last seen fleeing the building on foot, heading southbound.
In response to the incident, law enforcement mobilized approximately 100 officers to establish a perimeter and conduct a systematic search of the surrounding area. As a precautionary measure, a shelter-in-place order was issued for local schools and residents.
“We’ve exhausted all areas at this time and believe the subject is not in the area,” the Lansing Police spokesperson said. “We did do a shelter in place with our schools and our residents to make sure that they were safe, and we are lifting that at this time.”
As of Thursday afternoon, the shelter-in-place advisory has been lifted, though the search for the suspect continues. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the Lansing Police Department immediately.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
