Chicago, Illinois – A man is in serious condition following an overnight officer-involved shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood, after police say he exchanged gunfire with two tactical officers Monday night.

According to Chicago Police, the incident began around 10:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call of a person with a gun near 82nd Street and South Shore Drive. Tactical officers on the scene spotted a man matching the description provided over police radio.

Police said the armed man then ran to 83rd Street, approximately one block away. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and ordered the man to keep his hands visible.

Moments later, police say the man and officers exchanged gunfire. Both officers fired their weapons, and the man was shot multiple times. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park, where he remains in serious condition.

No officers were shot, but both were taken to a hospital for observation, police said.

Scanner traffic indicated that officers later recovered a weapon in a church parking lot at 83rd Street and Brandon Avenue, one block from the initial shooting scene. Early morning footage showed officers canvassing the neighborhood and the church parking lot.
