Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting in Salt Lake City’s Ballpark Neighborhood

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — One person was killed Friday evening in an officer-involved shooting in the Ballpark neighborhood.

A spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Police Department said officers responded to a call about a person with a weapon, possibly a suicidal individual, just after 6:30 p.m. Police arrived within minutes and took positions around the residence near Lucy Avenue.

Shortly after officers arrived, the individual came out of the residence holding a weapon “of some sort” in their hand. At least one officer discharged their weapon, and the person died at the scene.

The spokesperson confirmed that the investigation has been turned over to Protocol Team Three, the unit that handles officer-involved shootings. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

As of late Friday, the road remained blocked off for several hours while investigators worked the scene. Police have not released the identity of the deceased or additional details about the weapon.

The Salt Lake City Police Department has not provided further information on the victim at this time.
