Indiana Man Rents Home Next Door to Brother, Kills Him Before Suicide in Santa Clara

Santa Clara police have determined that a fatal shooting and subsequent house fire on Enri Avenue last week stemmed from a targeted attack by one brother on the other.

Investigators say 49-year-old Matthew Heftlin traveled from Indiana to California with the intent to kill his 52-year-old brother, Mark Heftlin. Mark, who leaves behind a wife and daughter, was shot dead outside his home.

According to authorities, Matthew secretly rented the house next door to his brother three days before the attack. Family members were unaware of his presence in the neighborhood. He had been staying in the greater San Jose area for several weeks prior.

On Friday, officers found Mark dead from gunshot wounds. Santa Clara Police Chief Cory Morgan said Matthew ambushed his older brother as he retrieved items from his car. After a brief verbal exchange, Matthew, who was concealing a firearm inside a paper bag, opened fire.

Police described the killing as part of a deadly plan hatched well in advance. Matthew had driven a rental vehicle from Indiana carrying multiple firearms and ammunition.

After the shooting, Matthew returned to the rented home, set a fire in a rear bedroom using fire logs that had been delivered to him, and then took his own life. A gun was found near his body and another in his waistband. Authorities also recovered two additional guns and $95,000 in cash inside the home; the significance of the money remains unclear.

Detectives searched Matthew’s home in Indiana but found no notes or manifestos that would explain a motive. Santa Clara police have classified the incident as a targeted homicide followed by suicide.

Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gilmore expressed sympathy for the family, stating, “A husband is gone. A father is gone. And no words from any of us can fill that absence.” She described the event as a deeply personal and private tragedy between two estranged brothers that had devastating consequences for the entire family and the neighborhood.

The case bears similarities to a fatal incident in San Bruno several months earlier, in which one brother shot and killed another, set a home on fire, and then committed suicide.
