An ordinary traffic stop devolved into a violent police chase across two Nassau County towns on Wednesday, involving multiple crashes and gunfire that triggered lockdowns at local schools.
The incident began around 12:30 p.m. in Port Washington, when an officer attempted to pull over a driver. According to Nassau County police, the driver refused to stop and instead sped off, causing multiple vehicle collisions as he fled.
The chase spanned two towns—Port Washington and Manhasset—and left crime tape blocking off scenes in both neighborhoods. Sources confirmed that shots were fired during the pursuit, though no injuries were reported.
In Manhasset, the chaos unfolded near the Americana Mall, where locals dining in the area scrambled to safety as police continued the chase. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise resembling a shotgun blast.
Nassau County police confirmed that the individual responsible for the multiple accidents was apprehended and is in custody.
The heavy police presence prompted a lockdown at a nearby middle school and high school.
As of Wednesday evening, police have not released a clear timeline of events, any details regarding the gunshots witnesses reported hearing, or information on possible charges the driver could face.
