WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is rallying support for the Save America Act, arguing that rigorous voter verification measures—including photo identification and proof of citizenship—reflect the will of the majority of Americans. In a recent television interview, McCarthy also issued a stark warning regarding what he described as an alarming rise in anti-Semitism within the Democratic Party, specifically highlighting the growing political influence of Mamdani.
Discussing the Save America Act, McCarthy emphasized that the proposed legislation is designed to protect the integrity of American elections. He argued that requiring voters to present a photo ID and proof of citizenship is a common-sense standard, comparing the requirement to the identification needed to board a commercial airplane. According to McCarthy, these measures do not provide an unfair advantage to any political party; rather, they ensure that only citizens are casting ballots and help eliminate post-election disputes over results. He noted that while the United States currently maintains very liberal voting rules, the objective of the legislation is simply to ensure that every American can vote, but only Americans.
McCarthy stressed that support for strict voter checks extends far beyond Republican circles. He claimed that more than 70 percent of Americans, including a significant majority of Democrats, favor these election security measures. Because of this widespread public backing, McCarthy advised that if the legislation faces roadblocks in Congress, proponents must continue to aggressively message the issue.
By forcing floor votes in both the House and the Senate, McCarthy believes lawmakers can put their opponents on the public record. He noted that many lawmakers claim they cannot support certain measures when asked, but will ultimately vote for them when faced with the pressure of a floor vote. McCarthy urged politicians not to fear electoral backlash for supporting the bill, suggesting that standing firm on the issue will ultimately lead to political victories. He praised the current President for his relentless push on the agenda, noting that the President’s refusal to back down is essential to advancing the legislation and holding opponents accountable at the ballot box.
Beyond election integrity, McCarthy expressed deep concern over the shifting dynamics within the Democratic Party regarding Israel and Jewish communities. He observed that the party has moved from simply distancing itself from Israel to adopting an openly “anti” stance. McCarthy stated that this shift toward anti-Semitism is deeply frightening and noted that individuals expressing such bigotry are no longer afraid to voice their views, even using them to win elections.
McCarthy criticized Democratic leadership for failing to adequately confront this issue. He pointed to the political trajectory of Mamdani, noting his mayoral run and his recent victories in congressional races where he defeated established incumbents. McCarthy asserted that because the Democratic leader for Congress sits in New York and was recently defeated, Mamdani has effectively replaced Hakeem as the de facto leader of the Democratic Party. He warned that Mamdani’s political faction prominently features anti-Semitism as a major component of its platform, calling on party leaders to take a definitive stand against the bigotry.
