Families Grieve After Deadly Shooting at West Dallas Short-Term Rental

DALLAS, Texas — Three young adults were killed and a fourth person injured in a shooting at a Memorial Day gathering held at a short-term rental property, authorities confirmed. Police continue to search for the suspect as the community grapples with the loss.

The victims were identified as 24-year-old Jaiden Cooper, 20-year-old Jaiclyn Scott, and 19-year-old Journie Griffin. All were adults who had gathered at the residence near the intersection of Bill Big and Bayside streets for a party on the holiday.

Patrick Gillespie, speaking on the investigation, confirmed that four individuals were struck by gunfire, three of whom died at the scene or shortly after. Authorities have not released details about the fourth victim’s condition.

Families of the deceased have chosen not to speak publicly at this time, describing their grief as overwhelming. However, Griffin’s family shared photographs and a statement describing her as “full of life, personality and potential.” They noted she had recently graduated and was preparing to pursue new dreams and plans.

Neighbors reported that the Memorial Day event drew a large crowd to the residential area. One community member, speaking on condition of anonymity, called the violence “a travesty,” adding, “All kinds of unnecessary, unwanted, unwarranted violence, death, guns.”

Investigators documented bullet holes at the property and are reviewing evidence as the search for the shooter continues. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not disclosed a motive.

The incident has renewed attention on Dallas’ short-term rental regulations. The city maintains an ordinance prohibiting such rentals in single-family neighborhoods. However, that policy faced legal challenge in 2023 when a group of short-term rental operators filed suit against the city; court proceedings regarding the matter remain ongoing.

Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact local authorities. The investigation remains active.
