Deputy Critical but Stable After Hospital Shooting; Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder

MICHIGAN CITY, Indiana – A 22-year-old man has been formally charged in connection with a shooting at a Franciscan Health hospital that left a LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputy critically wounded.

The suspect, Sharod Grafton Jr, faces charges including attempted murder, battery against a public safety official, and auto theft.

The shooting occurred Friday inside the Michigan City hospital. The wounded deputy, 33-year-old Jon Samuelson of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, was shot three times.

Authorities report that Deputy Samuelson underwent eight hours of surgery following the incident. While his condition remains critical, officials say he is now in stable condition. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office has expressed optimism about his recovery.
