Crowdfunding Bid for Defunct Spirit Airlines Surpasses $300 Million

A crowdfunding campaign launched to rescue Spirit Airlines following its operational shutdown has unexpectedly raised over $300 million, according to the initiative’s creator.

The effort was started by TikTok creator Hunter Peterson, who first proposed purchasing the bankrupt airline through crowdfunding in a video posted to the app. Peterson subsequently set up a website, LetsBuySpiritAir dot com, to collect pledges.

In a later video, Peterson described the campaign’s origins as a lighthearted gesture, stating that it started as a joke but is now “rapidly going out of control in the best way possible.”

The fundraising surge comes after Spirit Airlines officially ended operations and canceled all flights on Saturday, May the Second, concluding approximately 34 years of service. The airline is currently undergoing the liquidation process.
