Atlanta Police Apprehend Suspect in Deadly Beltline Stabbing

ATLANTA, Georgia — Atlanta Police Department Chief Darin Schierbaum announced Thursday that the suspect wanted in a deadly stabbing along the Beltline has been taken into custody.

In an update to the media, Chief Schierbaum credited tips from the public and swift coordination among law enforcement agencies for the rapid arrest. He specifically thanked members of the media for helping alert the city and Atlantans who called in tips during the search.

According to the chief, two officers assigned to the Zone 5 precinct — Officer Alex and his field trainee Officer Taylor — were on patrol and passing down Peachtree Street when they spotted a bicycle matching the description from a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert. Additional footage provided by the Georgia Tech Police Department had helped identify the individual sought in the homicide.

“The officers saw the bicycle, recognized it, and then closely examined the rider and saw that there was a person they were seeking for the homicide,” Chief Schierbaum said. “They moved in quickly [and] took him into custody without incident.”

Both the officers and the suspect are safe, the chief confirmed. Authorities are not yet releasing the suspect’s photograph to the public; Director Spikes will provide that information once it is ready.

Chief Schierbaum described the apprehension as a coordinated group effort. Multiple law enforcement agencies reviewed camera footage, with contributions from Georgia Tech and a quick response from the FBI providing additional resources. Every member of the Atlanta Police Department participated in the search, including two officers who were responding to an unrelated call.

“I want to commend the men and women of the Atlanta Police Department for their diligent work to make sure this individual is apprehended before they could harm another citizen of this city,” Chief Schierbaum stated. “That is our mission and we are never going to shy away from that mission of working very hard to keep this city safe.”

The chief thanked Mayor for providing the resources that allowed officers to search the city thoroughly and remove a dangerous person from the streets. The suspect is expected to appear before a Fulton County judge.

Chief Schierbaum urged the courts to “take note and take the appropriate action within the law to make sure this individual does not harm anyone in our city again.”
