Arson Suspect in Custody After Setting Fire Inside Chamblee Walmart

CHAMBLEE, Georgia — A suspect is in jail after deliberately starting a fire inside a Walmart in Chamblee, according to police in DeKalb County.

Authorities say the incident unfolded just after 1:30 this afternoon at the Walmart on Shambley Tucker Road. Investigators report that a man allegedly set bathroom mats and towels on fire in the store’s bathroom section.

Chamblee police confirmed that the building was quickly evacuated and traffic in the area was shut down as rescue crews worked to extinguish the flames.

Surveillance cameras tracked the suspect leaving the store and heading toward the MARTA station in Chamblee. He was later located and taken into custody at the Doraville station by transit police.

The store remains closed tonight as investigators continue to piece together what led up to the fire and whether anyone else could be involved.
