Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old injured on the city’s east side near the popular Brady Street area.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Farwell and Cambridge avenues, just steps from the start of Brady Street and near a bus stop. According to Milwaukee police, the victim and the shooter did not know each other. The two were involved in an argument that escalated into gunfire.
The teenager was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive, police said. Officers responded quickly, taping off the intersection at Cambridge Avenue and Brady Street while laying down evidence markers at the scene.
Residents in the neighborhood described hearing the gunshots echo through their homes late Monday night. One nearby resident said, “We heard it echo through the house. We thought at first, well, maybe it was backfire. But… it was definitely a pop.”
People who live and work on Brady Street expressed concern about ongoing violent crime in the area. One resident noted, “You get so many people down here that cause problems. People get scared. They don’t want to come down here anymore. They don’t want to spend their money here.” Another added that last summer saw some problems and hoped for better conditions this year with increased safety measures, saying, “It’s going to be a busy summer for sure.”
Milwaukee police said they are still looking for the shooter. In anticipation of larger crowds during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, authorities plan an increased police presence on Brady Street to help maintain safety.
