Ten people are back on land after a small airplane crashed approximately 80 miles off the coast of Melbourne, prompting a large-scale rescue response from the U.S. Coast Guard and Patrick Space Force Base.
The survivors were flown into Melbourne Airport, where Brevard County Fire Rescue and Melbourne Fire Rescue assessed their condition before aiding in medical transport. All ten rescued individuals were taken to Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, a Level Two Trauma Center.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, no fatalities have been reported. However, WESH Two News has learned that a total of 11 people were brought to the medical center. The extent of their injuries remains unknown at this time.
U.S. Coast Guard officials stated they do not yet know what caused the small plane to crash, and the incident remains under an ongoing investigation.
