LITHONIA, Georgia – A deadly shooting in a busy Publix parking lot has left one woman dead and a man hospitalized, according to authorities and witnesses at the scene.
Police are investigating the incident, which occurred on Panola Road in Lithonia, within the Stonecrest area of DeKalb County. The scene has since been cleared, but the medical examiner’s office responded, and a vehicle involved was towed from the lot.
Witnesses told investigators that two people were shot inside a vehicle parked at the Publix. Officials have confirmed that a woman was found dead in the vehicle.
A second individual—believed by officials on the scene to be a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound—was seen being transported toward Grady Memorial Hospital. An ambulance escorted by DeKalb County police was observed heading in that direction.
It remains unclear whether the wounded individual is a second victim or a suspect in the shooting.
A reporter reporting from the scene, noted that witnesses initially reported a possible child in the vehicle, but that information has not been confirmed.
“A young woman lost her life in this parking lot,” he said. “There were dozens of people out here when those shots rang out. A lot of people witnessed this—a horrific scene.”
As of the latest reports, DeKalb County Police have not released any official details about the shooting, stating they were still working to contact investigators. The parking lot is described as a very busy public area, with dozens of bystanders present at the time of the gunfire.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
