Former Deputy National Security Adviser KT McFarland has announced the launch of “Project Freedom,” a new initiative aimed at escorting stranded commercial vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz, which she says has become a de facto blockade zone controlled by the United States.
In an interview, McFarland explained that American military forces already effectively control the strategic waterway. “We essentially already control the Strait,” she said, noting that two American-flagged vessels have already transited the area. She outlined a multilayered defensive approach, including the ability to escort ships through the strait or use perimeter defenses to neutralize missiles, drones, and fast boats.
McFarland clarified that while the U.S. maintains a blockade specifically against ships going to and from Iran, Project Freedom is designed to guide the roughly 300 vessels currently locked in by Iranian forces back out through the strait.
She described the economic pressure on Iran as severe, stating that the Iranian economy is “collapsing,” with millions unemployed and the military going unpaid. “Time is not on their side,” she said.
McFarland also characterized Iran’s decision to attack UAE pipelines as a critical miscalculation. “It pushes the UAE firmly into the embracing arms of Israel and the United States against Iran,” she said, referencing a statement from the UAE foreign ministry, which reserved the right to a “full and legitimate response” to recent drone strikes that sparked a fire at the Fujirah oil hub.
While acknowledging that a diplomatic solution is ultimately necessary, McFarland argued that the current conflict is being driven by military and economic action. She pointed to “Operation Economic Fury” as the key factor pushing Iran toward collapse. She suggested that internal dissent could soon force regime change, adding of the current Iranian military leadership: “Are those guys still the IRGC leaders a couple days from now? I seriously doubt it.”
Asked when commercial traffic might return to normal levels, McFarland predicted a significant turnaround by summer. She estimated that once the strait is cleared and oil vessels begin moving again, the price of oil and gasoline would “go down very quickly.” She suggested that if the Iran problem is resolved by the Fourth of July, “everybody’s going to hail Donald Trump as one of the great saviors of the American economy and the world economy.”
