Storm Chaser Aids Rescue of Man Trapped in Streator Tornado Debris

STREATOR, Illinois — A man was rescued from the rubble of his collapsed home Thursday after a tornado struck the Streator area during a severe weather outbreak, with storm chaser and photojournalist Scott Lasker assisting in the emergency effort before first responders arrived.

Lasker, who was documenting the storm system, captured video of what he estimated to be at least an EF2-strength tornado. After filming the tornado, he traveled to South Streator to assess damage when he encountered a distressed woman approximately 100 yards away.

According to Lasker, the woman informed him that her husband was trapped beneath debris from their leveled home. He immediately handed her his camera and rushed to assist, helping lift a heavy door that had pinned the man’s leg. Lasker remained with the couple, offering comfort, until police arrived and completed the rescue operation.

The rescued individual, a man whose wife was unharmed, appeared to have sustained injuries including visible blood and possible broken limbs, though Lasker noted he appeared likely to recover. Lasker emphasized that he avoided extended conversation with the victim due to the traumatic circumstances.

“This is an awful, awful thing to see,” Lasker stated regarding the aftermath. He also addressed common misconceptions about his profession, noting that storm chasers frequently witness devastating scenes and are often among the first to reach affected areas.

Local emergency personnel took over the rescue upon arrival, ensuring the trapped individual received proper medical attention. The incident underscores the dual role some weather documentarians play—capturing critical storm footage while occasionally providing immediate aid in disaster zones.

Authorities continue to assess damage across the Streator area following the tornado. Residents are advised to avoid affected zones until safety inspections are complete.
