DECATUR, Georgia — A DeKalb County police officer is recovering in stable condition after being stabbed in the head and arm during an encounter with a suspect who was subsequently shot by the officer, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred just after 8 a.m. on North Decatur Road in Decatur, when an officer approached a man standing on the property of a vacant business, according to investigators. The man reportedly refused to identify himself before attacking the officer with a sharp-edged weapon.
During the assault, the officer sustained stab wounds to the head and arm. In response, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
As of early evening, law enforcement officials stated the officer remains in stable condition, while the suspect is listed in critical condition.
