GBI Leads Investigation After Cobb County Police Fatally Shoot Man Following Standoff

COBB COUNTY, Georgia — A Cobb County police encounter escalated into a vehicle pursuit and standoff late Friday night, ending with officers fatally shooting a man who authorities say brandished a firearm.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Friday near Windy Hill Road and Osborne Court. According to a Cobb County police spokesperson, officers attempted to stop a vehicle that subsequently fled, leading to a chase that ended when the car veered off the road, flipped, and came to rest near roadside bushes. Tire marks at the scene corroborate the vehicle’s path.

The driver, identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) as Gregory Hill, remained inside the overturned vehicle. A GBI spokesperson confirmed the agency has assumed leadership of the investigation, which is standard protocol in Georgia for officer-involved shootings.

Cobb County police stated that SWAT personnel were deployed after Hill refused to exit the vehicle despite repeated verbal commands. Neighbors reported hearing officers negotiating with Hill, urging him to come out with his hands raised and referencing his family. “They said, ‘You’re under arrest. Come out,'” one resident recalled, adding that officers also pleaded, “Think about your son.”

According to the Cobb County police spokesperson, the confrontation turned violent when Hill displayed a firearm. Officers returned fire, and Hill was fatally wounded. Police noted that both Hill and officers discharged weapons during the exchange.

Local residents initially mistook the gunshots for firecrackers, a sound they described as common in the area. Security footage captured an individual witnesses identified as Hill fleeing the vehicle prior to the shooting. The Cadillac involved had reportedly been damaged in a separate crash and fire at the same location one week earlier.

Family members present at the scene, who declined to speak on camera, described Hill as a father of two and a grandfather of one residing in Cobb County.

The GBI spokesperson stated that the agency’s investigative team is processing the scene and reviewing evidence, including witness statements and video footage. No further details regarding the officers involved or the specific circumstances leading to the initial traffic stop were released pending the ongoing investigation.
