COOK COUNTY, Illinois — A fatal incident on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) triggered a large-scale emergency response Thursday, involving local police, the bomb squad, and federal agents, and resulting in the closure of the expressway in both directions near Interstate 294.
Authorities confirmed at least one fatality. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office stated that the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. Officials indicated the deceased is presumably the occupant of an SUV at the center of the investigation, which came to a stop on I-290 just east of Mannheim Road. The vehicle sustained significant damage, with its front windshield and several side windows blown out. No other vehicles appear to have been involved in the initial incident.
The scene remained active hours after the incident first unfolded around 10:00 a.m. The FBI’s Evidence Response Team was observed preparing to examine the vehicle, and the Bellwood Fire Department was also on site. A bomb technician and a bomb-disposal robot initially approached the SUV before personnel conducted an in-person search. Dozens of evidence markers were placed across all lanes of the expressway.
Illinois State Police, leading the investigation, have not disclosed what prompted the substantial police presence. The expressway remained closed in both directions throughout the afternoon, with officials warning commuters to expect extended closures.
The incident caused significant traffic disruptions as the morning rush hour wound down. The Illinois Department of Transportation implemented traffic diversions well before the scene to prevent gridlock. Nevertheless, drivers faced standstill conditions, with some commutes doubling or tripling in length. One commuter traveling from Elgin reported a typical 45-minute trip extending to over an hour and twenty minutes due to closures on Mannheim Road and required detours. Witnesses described seeing multiple helicopters overhead and passengers exiting immobilized vehicles.
Authorities encouraged the public to avoid the area and use alternate routes. While the Illinois Department of Transportation’s efforts helped manage traffic flow, officials noted that some motorists initially attempted to exit by turning around and driving the wrong way on the expressway when the incident first occurred.
The investigation remains ongoing.
