SAN JOSE, California — Authorities are searching for suspects following a fatal drive-by shooting in downtown San Jose early Sunday morning that left one person dead and two others injured.
The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. when an unknown suspect or suspects opened fire on a black Porsche carrying three occupants near First and East Reed Streets. The vehicle subsequently crashed into The Fay apartment complex, where plywood now covers damaged windows as cleanup crews work to restore the area.
San Jose police confirmed that all three victims were inside the Porsche at the time of the shooting. One victim died from their injuries, while the two survivors remain under medical care. Investigators emphasized there is no evidence that any of the vehicle’s occupants returned fire.
“The car crash occurred subsequently after the shooting,” a police spokesperson said. “We’re still trying to paint a picture of what led to the shooting, what led to the homicide, and our detectives are working around the clock to follow leads so that we could quickly identify and apprehend the suspect.”
Nearby residents described hearing intense gunfire. Jabari King, who lives in the area, said the sounds resembled “fully automatic” weapon fire. “Probably like 10 to 12 shots. That’s what I heard,” King stated.
Resident Neil Beck also reported hearing the disturbance. “Just heard a couple cars like going fast, but I know the difference between fireworks and gunshots,” Beck said. “I’m thinking, well, maybe somebody had an accident or something, but I’m thinking that sounded like gunshots.”
Investigators have confirmed that none of the three victims are San Jose residents, though their hometowns are not being publicly disclosed at this time. Detectives hope interviews with the two survivors will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify a possible motive.
Police are exploring two primary theories: whether the incident stemmed from a road rage altercation that escalated shortly before the shooting, or if it was a targeted attack against one or all of the Porsche’s occupants.
“This is San Jose’s 10th homicide of 2026,” authorities noted. “We take these kind of violent crimes seriously.”
Officials expressed relief that no pedestrians or residents in surrounding buildings were injured during the incident. “In any situation where someone produces a firearm and indiscriminately shooting in the public that could create a dangerous situation for anyone involved,” a police spokesperson said.
Investigators are actively reviewing witness statements and seeking surveillance footage from security cameras or personal devices that may have captured the event. Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact San Jose police homicide detectives.
The search for the suspect or suspects remains ongoing.
