Airbnb Expands Into Airport Rides, Groceries, and Curated Experiences

Airbnb is significantly broadening its travel ecosystem, announcing new services that extend far beyond its core accommodation offerings. The expansion includes airport pickup, grocery delivery, luggage storage, car rentals, boutique hotel listings, and intentionally curated local experiences, according to Dave Stephenson, Airbnb’s Chief Business Officer.

“We’ve now done and we’re doing announcing this year is just further expansion to services,” Stephenson explained. “Things like airport pickup, grocery delivery, luggage storage, car rentals—those are not the most unique and different things. Like we’re known for these really unique and different things, but they are things you still need on your trip.”

Stephenson emphasized that while services like car rentals may not inherently feel “magical,” they are often essential to reaching the distinctive stays Airbnb is known for. “If you want to get to a magical Airbnb, you may have to rent a car. And why not allow you to kind of do that with us?”

A major focus of the expansion centers on landmark experiences. Stephenson noted that approximately 75% of travelers want to see a landmark when visiting a new destination. However, Airbnb aims to differentiate its offerings by ensuring guests can experience these sites in unique, high-quality ways. “We’re not an open marketplace for experiences. Not anyone can just bring their [experience] onto Airbnb,” Stephenson stated. “We analyze and test and just understand what are the amazing experiences before we bring them on and choose them very intentionally.”

The company is also accelerating its integration of boutique and independent hotels. Following its acquisition of HotelTonight in 2019, Airbnb has now committed to adding thousands of unique, independent, and boutique hotel properties to its platform, further diversifying lodging options for travelers.

On the technology front, Airbnb has implemented 200 improvements to its app for both guests and hosts. A key component of this upgrade strategy involves AI-driven tools designed to enhance real-world travel rather than increase screen time. “We’re actually trying to use AI to make an experience in the real world better,” Stephenson said. “We’re not trying to use AI to attach you to a technical device.”

The strategic expansion reflects Airbnb’s evolving vision: to serve as a comprehensive travel companion that handles both the practical logistics and the memorable moments of a trip, all while maintaining its signature focus on unique, high-quality experiences.
