Washington — An armed suspect who opened fire outside the White House was killed by Secret Service agents in a rapid exchange of gunfire, with the incident appearing to be a deliberate suicide mission, according to former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer.
Coffindaffer, a law and justice contributor, described the suspect’s actions as highly unusual given the mismatch in firepower. “This really seemed to be a suicide mission,” she said. “All he had was a handgun… knowing that that would sort of arm him to go up against Secret Service.”
Authorities responded immediately by securing the area and checking for additional threats. Coffindaffer noted that the top priority was confirming there were no other threats or explosive devices, including a search of the suspect’s vehicle.
On the investigative front, she indicated the FBI is likely to take the lead in evidence recovery and the broader probe. Although the suspect is deceased and will not face charges, authorities must remain open to the possibility of other individuals being involved, even though such incidents are typically carried out by lone actors.
A civilian was struck in the crossfire and was reported to be in critical condition. Coffindaffer emphasized that investigators will need to determine whether the civilian was hit by the suspect or by Secret Service rounds. She noted that the busy area around the White House increases the risk of stray bullets, particularly with reports of at least two dozen shots fired.
Coffindaffer described the Secret Service’s response as effective, successfully preventing the suspect from breaching the perimeter. She assessed that much of the gunfire likely came from ground agents at close range due to how quickly the threat materialized, though snipers may also have engaged.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns about threats against the Trump family. Coffindaffer highlighted a reported assassination plot against Ivanka Trump allegedly linked to Iranian terror groups, though she stated there is no indication it is connected to the White House shooting.
She expressed deep concern about the overall threat environment, noting multiple prior assassination attempts against former President Trump. “When you look at the Trump family right now, it’s going to be a miracle if they make it through their time here,” Coffindaffer said, citing intense domestic polarization and strong foreign policy decisions—including tensions with Iran—as factors driving the elevated risks.
Coffindaffer described the current threat level as “extraordinarily high,” pointing to both domestic political divisions and international backlash against the administration’s actions.
