Staten Island, New York — One person was killed and 35 others injured Friday after an explosion and fire at a Staten Island shipyard, authorities said.
The victim who died was a civilian, according to officials. One additional civilian was hurt, along with at least 34 members of the New York City Fire Department.
The incident began around 3:30 p.m. when first responders were called to a fire burning in the basement of a metal structure at the rear of the shipping dock. Crews encountered limited visibility and heavy smoke upon arrival. Two workers were reported trapped in the basement at the time.
Approximately 50 minutes later, a major explosion occurred at the site. The fire has since been brought under control.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
