Stone Mountain, Georgia – DeKalb County police are investigating a shooting that left a Stone Mountain High School student injured Tuesday morning while waiting for the school bus.
The DeKalb County School District confirmed that the student was shot at the bus stop at the intersection of Juliette Road and Stone Mill Drive. According to witnesses, a person fired shots from nearby bushes, striking a girl in the arm. The victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital.
A parent who did not wish to be identified on camera told reporters her son was at the bus stop when the shooting occurred. “I heard like a few gunshots and really it’s, it’s really heartbreaking, you know, um, the gun violence just needs to stop,” she said.
Xavier White, who was walking with his daughter in the area, expressed concern over the incident. “I don’t want my daughter growing up thinking that’s OK or that’s something she’s supposed to indulge and see growing up in this world,” White said, adding that the shooting has motivated him to consider relocating his family.
The DeKalb County School District is also investigating the shooting and stated that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. The district urged parents to speak with their children about making positive choices, resolving conflicts peacefully, and reporting any incidents to school staff.
DeKalb County police confirmed the student suffered only minor injuries. No further details about suspects or a possible motive have been released.
