Deadly Standoff in Cobb County Ends with Two Deceased

COBB COUNTY, Georgia – A welfare check that began as a concern for an uncontactable resident escalated into a seven-and-a-half-hour standoff on Thursday, leaving a man and a woman dead in an East Cobb neighborhood.

Police were initially dispatched to a home near Bryant Lane and Rainwater Drive around 8:30 a.m. following a call reporting that someone had not been reached in a while. Upon arrival, officers observed a man moving around inside the residence, but he refused to come outside.

After the man did not answer the door, authorities obtained a search warrant. While executing the warrant, officers heard a gunshot from inside the home, prompting them to call in the SWAT team.

According to Cobb County police, the situation intensified when the man fired a shot toward the SWAT team. Officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. A drone deployed inside the residence confirmed the man was still alive following the exchange.

“During that time when they had the perimeter established around the house, several call out attempts were attempted. And then another round was fired inside the residence towards the officers,” a Cobb County police spokesperson said. “At some point following that, an officer involved shooting took place, and the suspect was wounded.”

The spokesperson added that despite continued efforts to establish communication, the man “refused to comply and at some point he ended up taking his own life.”

When officers finally entered the home, they discovered that the man had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A woman was also found deceased inside the residence.

Cobb County police stated that it is not yet clear what the relationship was between the man and the woman, and investigators are continuing to determine how the woman died.

No officers were injured during the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is en route to probe the officer-involved shooting aspect of the case.
