Trump Announces Deal to Delay 50% Tariffs on Canadian Imports

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced a last-minute deal to delay tariffs on Canadian imports, pausing a planned 50 percent tax on $20 billion worth of goods just hours before the sanctions were set to take effect.

The announcement, made by President Donald J. Trump on his Truth Social platform, confirmed that the United States and Canada have reached an agreement in principle, subject to the finalization of official documents. The pause applies to a three-day period, halting the import taxes that were originally scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday.

“I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!” President Trump stated in his post.

In the same announcement, the President also touched on energy infrastructure, adding, “The great Keystone XL pipeline, long ago killed by sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave.”

The delayed import taxes would have impacted approximately 5 percent of the total volume of goods Canada ships to the United States each year. The affected shipments reportedly include a diverse range of products, from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.

By securing this brief extension, the agreement effectively buys time for further negotiations and, at least temporarily, avoids introducing new strain into the historically tense trade relationship between the United States and Canada.

As the three-day window begins, observers and markets are now awaiting further official statements from Mark Carney or other representatives of the Canadian government to confirm the details of the deal and outline the next steps for finalizing the documentation.
