COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Illinois — Two individuals were shot and hospitalized in stable condition following a firearms trafficking operation that culminated in an attempted armed robbery of undercover law enforcement agents, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred at the intersection of 189th Street and Lorretto Lane when an ATF special agent and a Chicago Police Department task force officer returned fire after a group allegedly attempted to rob undercover agents, authorities stated. The two individuals struck by gunfire were among five people taken into custody during the operation.
According to officials, evidence recovered at the scene included a white vehicle cordoned off by investigators and a firearm equipped with an extended magazine located in the street. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots; one resident stated they observed three shots, while another described seeing an individual fleeing the area as agents attended to the two suspects who had been shot.
The operation involved a multi-agency effort including the ATF, Chicago Police Department, FBI, and Illinois State Police. Officials noted the FBI is specifically assisting with aspects of the investigation related to the alleged assault on a federal officer. Additionally, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has opened a parallel inquiry, as is standard procedure whenever a Chicago Police officer is involved in a shooting.
As of the latest update provided by authorities, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident. The two hospitalized individuals remain in stable condition, and all five detained persons are in custody pending further investigation.
